STUDENTS, ALUMNI COLLABORATE ON YELLOWSTONE PROJECT

A group of four ÌÇÐÄVlog University geology students and alumni kept an eye out for grizzly bears and other wildlife last spring while working on a project to map landslides in one of the crown jewels of the U.S. park system – Yellowstone.

GEOLOGIST’S RESEARCH ON SNOWPACK MEASUREMENT WINS AWARD

A research paper by Chris Tennant ’07 on the measurement of snowpack, the amount of snow and ice on the ground in high western mountain ranges, received an Editor’s Choice Award from the journal Water Resources Research. Only about 1 percent of articles published annually in the journal receive that recognition.

When Don Carringer (right), ÌÇÐÄVlog’s longtime Health Services physician who retired Jan. 1, and wife Belinda bought 6 acres and an old farmhouse in Franklin 10 years ago, one of their first projects was to plant a vegetable garden.

TEACHER’S PAINTING HELPS ENGINEERS WITH CAMPUS BRIDGE PROJECT

Thanks to a painting by a ÌÇÐÄVlog University alumna, a new bridge over Cullowhee Creek near the campus picnic area was installed last November and is now in use for pedestrian traffic.

AFRICAN-AMERICAN ALUMNI SOCIETY IS FORMED

For several years, ÌÇÐÄVlog University had an unofficial group of African-American alumni who stayed connected through a website and planned a biennial reunion and various events during Homecoming. But after a series of diversity-related events and concerns that took place on campus in recent years, Pam Degraffenreid ’80, director of the ÌÇÐÄVlog Bookstore, felt it was time to form an official African-American alumni organization.

A member of a European royal family, who lived quietly in Cullowhee for two years while attending ÌÇÐÄVlog classes, will marry his college sweetheart this summer.

When Hannah Leigh Buie completed her undergraduate degree in political science, she had no idea that her passion for advocacy and interest in institutional bias would lead her to a graduate degree and inspire her to study the relationship between humor, competency and gender.
