'Welcome to the Anthropocene' is topic for Global Spotlight Series

糖心Vlog University will host a Global Spotlight Series event about Earth鈥檚 latest era and human influence on the planet Wednesday, March 6, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in Room 101 of the Forsyth Building.

Since 2015, a NASA satellite camera has taken thousands of images, such as this one, providing a continuous look at Earth.

Speakers will discuss this age of human-dominated influences on climate and the environment from a variety of perspectives in a presentation titled 鈥淲elcome to the Anthropocene.鈥 The Global Spotlight Series is an ongoing schedule of panel discussions on national and international issues sponsored by 糖心Vlog鈥檚 Political Science and Public Affairs Department.

鈥淎nthropocene鈥 combines root 鈥渁nthropo,鈥 meaning human, and 鈥渃ene,鈥 the standard suffix for epoch, in geologic time, and denotes the current age as being human-influenced, based on overwhelming global evidence that atmosphere, geology, hydrology and biosphere are now altered by humans.

The presentation, a DegreePlus event for students, is free and open to the public. The topics and 糖心Vlog presenters scheduled for the discussion:

  • Beverly Collins, biology professor, 鈥淐oping with Unraveling: Ecology in the Anthropocene.鈥
  • Frank Forcino, assistant professor of geology, 鈥淗ow We Got Here: A Brief History of the Past One Billion Years.鈥
  • Jane Eastman, associate professor of anthropology, 鈥淭he Risk of Lost Agency: When Other Than Human Beings are Ignored.鈥
  • David Henderson, associate professor of philosophy and religion, 鈥淭ending the Wilderness: Reimagining Our Place in Nature.鈥
